Students have a wide choice of schools in which to study the VCE. At Plenty Valley Christian College we encourage people to excel in their studies and to think through the wider issues about education, especially those that are uniquely addressed by a Christian ethos. Our senior secondary education sets the scene for adult choices in career and lifestyle.
In keeping with the intentions of the VCE we offer a flexible and comprehensive range of studies and programs that provide the pre-requisites for many tertiary courses. Students are given assistance to develop responsible work habits and to aim for high achievement. This approach is balanced by studies in, and the thoughtful practice of, a Christian life-style.
It is important for families to understand the structure of the VCE and the significant demands and influences it has on students. Information evenings held at the College are one means of providing people with helpful insights and procedures that make the VCE years more enjoyable. In addition a College published VCE handbook, the student and career's counsellor and VCE coordinator are available to assist students with course information, outlines and requirements.
Many of our studies have small enrolments making it clearly advantageous to students in terms of their interaction with staff and our resourcing of those studies.
The VCE years are also the level at which student leadership in the school becomes prominent. College captains are appointed annually and have a high profile in the ceremonial functions, the organisation of student programs and extra-curricular activities.
VCE curriculum grid
The VCE is a two year or four semester course during which students usually complete twenty-four semester-length units of study. Each unit involves one hundred hours of study, of which sixty are provided in formal classroom situations. A great deal of emphasis is placed on projects and assignments that are completed outside of class time.
A VCE course chosen by students consists of compulsory and interest based studies that come from broad curriculum areas called English, the Arts & Humanities, and the Mathematics, Sciences & Technology. English is a compulsory study, and students choose units from the Arts & Humanities and from the Mathematics, Science & Technology areas.
